If you have received your commission packet from the Secretary of State, the next step is to order your $15,000 surety bond and file it with your oath of office at your local County Clerk’s office. You must file your oath and bond within 30 days of your commission start date. Both your oath and bond must be filed in the county where you will maintain your principle place of business.
If you’ve purchased a package from us, the bond is included with that package, so just head over to our I Received My Commission! Now What? page for instructions on how to obtain the bond, as well as your other supplies.
Once you have obtained your bond, you will need to find your local County Clerk’s office. They are usually attached to courthouses and some may require that you make an appointment. Be sure to check with them so you don’t fall outside your 30-day filing period.
You will need to bring the following with you to file your oath of office and your bond:
- The original bond paperwork
- BOTH oath of office forms that were included in your commission packet
- Your original commission certificate
- Your ID card
- County filing fees (these vary by county, so be sure to check how much your county’s fees are)
Once your oath and bond are on file with the County Clerk’s office, you are cleared to start notarizing. Congrats! You may still be waiting for your seal to be manufactured, so make sure you have that on hand before notarizing any documents.
While waiting for your seal, expand your earning potential by taking a Loan Signing Agent course with us. For more information visit the Live Notary Seminars tab.
